Abstract :
Aim: To investigate the incidence of monosymptomatic enuresis nocturna (MEN) and its relation with surgery in patients who had adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy for adenotonsiller pathologies. Materials and Methods: The effects of surgery was retrospectively evaluated in 65 patients with ages between 5 and 23 who had adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy between 2004 and 2008. After exclusion of 8 patients with polysymptomatic enuresis nocturna according to ICCS criteria, 57 patients were included in this study. Results: MEN was found in 26 (45.6%) patients preoperatively. The symptoms improved in 19 (73%) patients who had MEN preoperatively. The recovery was observed in the fi rst month in 12 (63%) of these patients, between 1 and 3 months in 5 (26.3%) patients and between 3 and 12 months in 2 (10.5%) patients. When evaluated according to sex, 6 (46.1%) of the 13 male and 12 (92.3%) of the 13 female patients with MEN had improvement in their symptoms postoperatively. The difference between males and females was statistically considered to be signifi cant (p=0.027). Conclusion: In a multidisciplinary approach, it should be kept in mind that when adenotonsiller pathologies are treated, the symptoms of EN could also improve. Therefore, we thought that the patients admitting with EN symptoms to outpatient clinics should be questioned for complaints about upper airway obstruction and if so, adenotonsiller surgery might be performed in those who have indications for surgery.
