Title Of Article :
Evaluation of acute symptomatic seizures during central nervous system infections
Abstract :
Purpose: To evaluate patients who had acute symptomatic seizures during an infection of the central nervous system. Materials and methods: In this study, we included patients with a central nervous system infection diagnosed after an admission to the emergency department because of convulsions and also the patients who developed convulsions during their hospital stay for a central nervous system infection. In these patients, we collected data about age, gender, seizure type, EEG findings, brain imaging findings and the duration of anti-epileptic drug use and examined the incidence of epilepsy. Results: A total of 24 patients who had acute symptomatic seizures during an infection of the central nervous system were included. The most frequently seizure type was generalized tonic clonic seizures. Six of these patients (25%) developed epilepsy. Conclusion: In patients with acute symptomatic seizures during central nervous system infections, anti-epileptic drug treatment must be stopped if there is no recurrence of seizures when the underlying disease recovers.
