Abstract :

Sipahsalar is an important position in the administrative organization of the Gaznavid State. It is known that initially members of the dynasty were employed for Sipahsalar of Khorasan. However, the situation has changed after the domination on Khorasan by Seljuks in the period of Sultan Mes’ûd. The persons had the title of Sipahsalar conducted only the chief commander of the Gaznavid Army. Sipahsalar was usually placed on the right wing in the order of the Gaznavid army. Sipahsalar, according to his duty, occasionally make parade the troops under his command in front of the Sultan. In region, where Sipahsalars were sent or designated, read sermon on behalf of them. Sipahsalar also participates in the meetings, about military matters, held by the Sultan in the period of Sultan Mes’ûd. In this article will be focused on the development of this title and activities of the persons that had the title of Sipahsalar.
