Abstract :
Problems of emergence of the Ottoman State and context of the first Ottoman cronicles are the most controversial topics among the historians. The reason is thought that the available sources are unsufficient in many respects and they provide controversial information. To overcome the problem the sources should be treated again by the critical method. The article surveys the various royal dreams that forerunning the Ottoman hegemony and, on the other hand, aims to re-examine the related data in contemporary sources by the historical-critical method. In this context, the royal dreams such as The Dream With Motif of Tree Emerging from the Navel are brought under the scope. The Ottoman cronicle writers had added sentences and new motifs into the dreams whose prototypes are seen in political tradition of the Turkish-Islamıc states. In this way the Ottoman type of edited dreams were emerged. It seems that these new elements in royal dreams bears the traces of political arguments of the period. The Seljukid motifs in the dreams mean the Ottoman claims of being the political successor of the Seljukid State and Sheikh Edebali stresses the role of the ghazi dervishes in the foundation. At the end the historical context of the dreams is determined by means of additional motifs.
