Abstract :

Şirvanizade Mahmud Tahir was one of the founders of the Ottoman Democratic Party, also was responsible manager and leader writer of the Türkiye (Turkey) Gazette that it was journal of the Ottoman Democratic Party. He has written articles in Selamet-i Umumiye (The People s Salvation Gazette), Hür Memleket (The Free Country Gazette) and Genç Türk (The Young Turk Gazette), that these were the Democratic Party s newspapers. His articles in this newspapers have disturbed the government, he was sentenced to various penalties from monetary penalty to exile by Divan-ı Harb (The Court Martial). The Türkiye Gazette which is under the Şirvanizade s responsibility was published as publication of the Ottoman Democratic Party and the servant and defender of the democratic system. The newspaper always advocated democracy. It saw democracy as the only system shall provide and maintain the public law; it defended freedom of the press and multi-party system. Also the Türkiye Gazette has emerged the idea of the “İttihad-ı Anasır (The Association of Ethnic Elements)”, stressed the brotherhood of all the ethnic elements that make up the country. In this study, we will try to explain views on the concept of democracy; contribution to understanding of the Ottoman opposition and approach to the country s political, administrative, economic and social problems of the Türkiye Gazette.
