Two French Engineers Guided the Construction Environment and the Repair of Castles in Selim III Period
Abstract :
In this article, the repairs of the Ottoman castles located west of the Black Sea were examined in line with decisions of two French engineers in İstanbul rule of Selim III. Repairs of the some great castles as Ak-kerman, Bendery, İzmail, Kilia and construction period of their redoubts was defined through documents in Ottoman archive. Suggestions in the reports prepared for the Ottoman castles by two French engineers who François Kauffer and Joseph Gabriel Monnier make possible to understand construction periods of castles. At the same time, the people living in and around castles, generals and construction custodians with their thoughts were contributed to the process of construction. From this perspective, construction environment and procedures, materials used in constructions, the terminology which developed to perform construction works and to provide communication were examined in this article.
