Abstract :
The Chios Earthquake 3 April 1881 caused the death of thousands of people, devastation of tensof villages and districts, tens of thousands of victims to be homeless. The earthquake is thebiggest disaster Chios has ever faced in its history as well as it is the second biggest earthquakethat took place on the Ottoman lands in the 19th century. The victual and housing, health care, aidcampaigns, supply of the basic needs and the organization for distribution of all these hasoccurred as major issues however all these constitute the topic for another article since they arethe subjects of disaster management. In this article which is composed by using the archivedocuments, consul reports and the national press of the related time, the matters such as the lossand damage that the Chios Earthquake caused and some incidents that took place after theearthquake are dealt with thoroughly.
