Abstract :
This study, was conducted in order to determine the yield and quality characteristics of different İstanbul oregano (Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum) populations under the Bornova ecological conditions in between 2006- 2007 and 2007-2008. In the trial, nine different İstanbul oregano populations (Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum) which are obtained from Yalova, belong to the different locations and one population which is originated from Germany were used and experimental design was randomized block design with four replications in the experimental fields of the Department of Field Crops, Faculty of Agriculture, Ege University. In the research, according to the results of the first and second trial years, the highest values; the mean height of the plants 63.5 and 60.5 cm, total fresh herbage yields, 2632.49 and 2808.13 kg/da, total drug herbage yields 912.16 and 1074.53 kg/da, total drug leaves yields 539.24 and 676.95 kg/da and also the mean percentage of essential oils 4.59 % and 3.78 %, total essential oil yield 23.98 and 21.79 L/da were determined respectively. Also, main components of the essential oil were carvacrol, thymol, γ-terpinene and p-cymene. The highest main component of essential oil was obtained as carvacrol (88. 30 %) in one population.
