A Research for Defining Recreational Use of Porsuk Riverside and Adalar Area, Eskisehir

Urban rivers are the important part of urban landscapes. Porsuk river that crossed the city of Eskisehir from east to west was the center of commercial and recreational uses by the 1960s. After this time it lost its importance up to a great extent because of contamination and flood problems. ln 2003 the Porsuk river restoration project has changed the urban landscape and redefined the relationship between residents of Eskisehir and the river. The aim of this research is to define recreational use of the Porsuk riverside by user questionnaire. The questionnaires were applied to 68 people and they were analyzed by using percentage and average analysis. Results revealed that Porsuk riverside is an important recreational area for the residents because of the easy access. The restaurants and cafeterias took the first place for user preferences. The riverside have been popular among the young for passive recreational activities such as resting, river watching all year around both day and night.
