Abstract :
fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) is one of spice and an aromatic plant which is commercial produced and naturally grows in the flora of Turkey. Despite intensive studies on the cultivation of fennel varieties, there are limited studies on the properties of native fennel populations. The research objectives were to determine morphological and quality characteristics of natural population of fennel from Tokat Flora located the Black Sea region of Turkey. Fennel plants were sampled from four different areas of Tokat region. Plant height varied from 100 to 225 cm (mean 184 cm), and 1000 fruit weight were between 2.9 and 8.3 g (mean 5.4 g). Essential oil contents were varied from 3.50 to 10.30%. Estragole, main component of essential oil, was determined between 72.9 to 93.6% of essential oil. There were positive correlation between estragole and plant height (r = 0.06**) and stem number (r = 0.39*). But there were a negative correlation between essential oils and main component of estragole (r = --0.34*).
