A Study on Herd Management Practices of Goat Farms in Izmir, Canakkale and Balikesir Provinces

Abstract
the aim of this research is to determine herd managemet practices of goat farming in the provinces of Izmir, Canakkale and Balikesir. Data has been collected by survey from 234 goat farms through stratified (proportional) random sampling. Goat farms were grouped farms with 75 goats and less (Group 1), second group consists of farms with 76-150 goats (Group 2) while third group consists of farms with 151 goats and more (Group 3). Based on the provinces, Canakkale is the first place in goat number, followed by Balikesir province. It can be said that all of the goat farms have a settelement in system and that small goat farms have a nomadic or semi-nomadic system. Buck introduce in to herd in farms is free mating. Number of handled mating farms is very low. Average period of staying for bucks in herds is 10.11 months. 55.13% of goat farms are making preparations for parturuion. At 55.13% of the goat farms, there is no record of the weight weight. 58.55% of goat breeders have a kidding pen. Goat farms provide breeding requirements primarily from own herds. In order to develop goat husbandry, it is expected that the technical and economic decisions to be taken in short and medium term for goat breeders will make important contributions to the development of this production branch in our country.
