Physical activity levels and related factors at teaching stuffs in Pamukkale University medicine school
Abstract :
Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine physical activity levels teaching staff at Pamukkale University medicine school and related factors.Materials and methods:230 teaching stuffs in Pamukkale University Medicine school were the universe of this cross-sectional study. It was studied on the universe without performing sampling. A questionnaire was applied to determine physical activity levels and related factors among Educational Staff in Pamukkale University medicine school. Physical activity levels of the participants was determined by International Physical Activity Questionnaire – Long Form. The study was completed in October 2014. Descriptive statistics were applied for all the data for statistical analysis (mean and standard deviation). Chi-square test was used in the analysis of the research on the physical activity levels between the dependent variable and the independent variables.Results: % 40,2 (n=69) of the participants were female and % 59,8 (n=103) were male. International Physical Activity Questionnaire mean scores and standard deviations of the participants were 1225,2±1617,7 for walking,26,7±164,5 for cycling, 1438,7±2805,5 for moderate physical activity, 2043,4±5135,9 for vigorous physical activity and it was found 4734,2±7925,9 for total physical activity.Conclusion: Only 36,5% of the participants were sufficiently active and it was lower than our expectations. In surgical sciences divisions 47,4% of the participants were sufficiently active and this rate was way higher than medical sciences division and basic sciences division. This difference may be caused by the busy schedule of the surgery sciences divisions. Studies with participants of different faculties to examine the factors that affect physical activity level in a more detailed way are needed to be done.
