Evaluation of the results of smoking cessation clinic at the organized industrial zone
Abstract :
Purpose: Workers are among the priority groups in the fight against tobacco because of high smoking rates and additional risks of their work place. A smoking cessation clinic was opened in Organized Industrial Region.In this study, application profile of the smoking cessation clinic and short term quitting rates were investigated.Materials and methods:This is a descriptive study. Patients treated at this cessation clinic from February to August-2015 constituted the study population. Sociodemographic characteristics, smoking information of patients, Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale has been questioned by a questionnaire. Pulmonary function tests, electrocardiogram and CO measurements were performed. Individuals have been informed about the quitting methods through face-to-face interviews. Then, one of the proper methods was applied to the patients. Three interviews were also conducted at 2,4 and 8th weeks. The status of the patients in quitting smoking was determined by telephone. Gathered data were analyzed by using Chi-square, t-test, and Mann Whitney-U.tests.Results: Totally 302 people were admitted to clinic at seven months period. The majority of the applicants was male (81.8%). Mean age was 37.1±8.4. Approximately half of the applicants have high nicotine dependence.Anxiety and depression rate were detected as 58% and 16% respectively. The risk of anxiety was higher in women(p 0.01). Also 30.1% of them had chronicle disease. The most frequently reported symptoms were tiredness(76.8%) and sputum(69.7%).Totally 222 patients were follow-up for at least 3 months. 41.9% of the patients declared to have quitted smoking. Quit smoking rate were found to be significantly higher in the use of medication and in people who have tried to quit in the past. Cessation rate was 54.5% in the bupropion and 50.9% in the varenicline.Conclusion: The rising trend of applications in our polyclinic and the high smoking quit rate(41.9%) demonstrate the need in this field and that the polyclinic is effective.
