Abstract :

As known, among literary genres, the type of travel literature is much closer to the memoir literature. The author gives not only a personal memoir while traveling but also the region’s demographic, social, cultural and economic characteristics. West for East, especially Jerusalem is an important settlement as for the birthplace of Jesus, crucification of Jesus by the Romans, and the spread of Christianity. Holy Land (Terre Sainte), known as the realms, has always attracted the attention of the Western intellectuals, writers and poets. Since the early XIX century the French writers such as Nerval, Chateaubriand, Lamartine, Gautier, and many more, the author of the novel Madame Bovary (1857) Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) take its place among the authors of this privileged performing of Eastern journey. Authors reflect plenty of their observations, determinations and memories in their works. Almost all writers are also skilled and ambitious pilgrims. The author gathers the needed accumulation while travelling. In this study we will research the destination of Istanbul in “Eastern trips,” (Voyage en Orient) in which Gustave Flaubert and his friend Maxime Du Camp went on a journey in 1849. Flaubert hasn’t kept his admiration in front of Istanbul’s splendid Galata Tower, gorgeous Hagia Sophia mosque, dazzling Topkapi Palace and the high city walls. 2010 European Capital of Culture, Istanbul has hosted many civilizations. Today the city is spread over the continents of Asia and Europe; Istanbul was then one of the Khalkeidon cities and then became Constantinopolis, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, and then finally became the capital of the Ottoman Empire. In the past, many authors such as Flaubert wrote many articles about Istanbul, and today the city has become the most attracted place among tourists in the world: Beyoglu Uskudar, Tarabya, Ortakoy, Buyukdere Tophane streets have made important places in the memories of the readers. Literature-Tourism relationship establishes a big role for the city and its history.
