Abstract :
This study discusses and deals with influences of the symbolism, a late nineteenth-century art movement in European literature which made itself heavily felt up until the end of the first quarter of the 20th century, in particular, on Hungarian literature, and with pathway pursued by this art movement in Hungarian literature, as well as with prominent Hungarian symbolists. Hungarian literary people who carefully observed new ventures in European literature were quick to get symbolism into Hungarian literature. While doing this, they did not attempt to copy symbolist concepts which developed outside their own country and to adapt such concepts into their country’s realities, and, on the contrary, Hungarian symbolism has gone through a preparatory and enrichment process, thereby getting a more realistic and impressive structure. Hungarian symbolists have portrayed Hungarian society using literary tools of the symbolism movement. Making an inquiry into the symbolism movement in Hungarian literature and Hungarian symbolists means making an inquiry into psychological mindset of the Hungarian people in the last half of the 19th century and first quarter of the 20th century and into social structure of the Hungarian society as well as into implications of what happened in the Hungarian territory on future ventures experienced not only in Hungarian literature but also in their national history.
