GENOA AND THE GENOESE IN EVLIYA ÇELEBI’S TRAVEL BOOK
Abstract :
Evliya Çelebi left a rich resource with his travel book in many fields such as culture, literature, history and so on. He also gave the historical background related to Genoese which gained prominence in the commercial and maritime activities in Anatolia, Black Sea and the Aegean Islands during his travel initiated in 1635 in İstanbul and lasted approximately fifty years. He conveyed in his unique style the Genoese presence and their historical heritage in the Ottoman land both during and before his time. Basing on the information in his travel book, this study aims to display the Genoese presence in the places he travelled, their historical heritage and the reverberations attached.
