WHERE UTOPIA AND SATIRE MEETS: SAMUEL BUTLER’S EREWHON
Abstract :
Satire and utopia are two of the oldest genres of Western Literature. Although these two genres follow different paths within the history of literature, they occasionally come across. Thus, utopian writers often write their work in order to satirize the society in which they live and design better ones. Nineteenth century English novelist, Samuel Butler creates an imaginary country in his novel called Erewhon, and he satirizes the social problems of England as if they were lived in this imaginary country. This study aims at analyzing the historical relationship between utopia and satire, pointing out the utopian features of Erewhon, which is accepted as a work of satire by almost all literary circles, and trying to show in what ways the work is a utopian satire.
