REFLECTION OF “COAL MINE ACCIDENT IN ERMENEK” ON PRINTED MEDIA
Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to show how the coal mine accident occurred in Ermenek on 28 October 2014 was presented in the media in order to reveal the ideological dimension in the news. To caary out the study, the front pages of the newspapers Cumhuriyet, Zaman and Yeni Şafak were scanned from the internet and included in the samples. The attitudes of these newspapers against the political power and opposition in have been taken into consideration in the inclusion of these papers in this study. The method of critical discourse analysis has been used in this study and Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis model has been utilised. As a result of the analyses on the news, it has been found out that the newspaper representing different political lines with different ideological atmospheres reproduce the news from their own perspectives, present the stories in the way they want their readers to perceive them in accordance with the ownership of the newspapers. Therefore, it has been concluded that it is impossible to talk about an unbiased media and the public communication tools have an important role in manipulating the minds.
