OLD AGE IN TURKEY WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF WORKING LIFE AND RETIREMENT
Abstract :
The aim of this study is to carry out an evaluation of the phenomenon of old age as experienced in Turkey within the context of working life and retirement. For this purpose, the points where the phenomenon of old age intersects the phenomena of working life and retirement were discussed and the current situation of the social security system and how it manifested itself in the perception of retirement in the elderly were investigated. It was observed that, especially in comparison to the countries that enjoy a high level of welfare, the three phenomena in question could be handled better in Turkey and thus some suggestions were made to that end. The concept of “active aging” came into prominence at this point. Active aging could be defined as the process in which the opportunities of health, participation and security are optimized with the aim of improving the quality of life of the elderly. It became apparent in the study that active aging is an important concept in managing the elderly and the phenomenon of old age in Turkey in a better fashion.
