A STUDY ON THE PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY REFUGEES AND ASYLUM-SEEKERS IN THEIR ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE SERVICES IN ISPARTA PROVINCE

Refugees and asylum-seekers, who are afraid of persecution due to their religious beliefs, political opinions, and economic troubles leave their countries and encounter many problems in the countries where they take refuge in. These problems are led by insurmountable health problems that stem from the issues experienced in access to healthcare services. In this study, it is aimed to detect the problems that are experienced by refugees and asylum- seekers during their access to healthcare services. Within the scope of this study, 276 refugees and asylum-seekers are interviewed. As a data collection tool of this study, the “Problems Encountered in Having Access to Healthcare Services Questionnaire” is used that has been developed on the basis of a literature review. In consequence of the study, five major factors are established that are experienced by the refugees and asylum-seekers in accessing to healthcare services. These are: physicians’ negative attitudes, healthcare personnel’s negative attitudes, communication problems, problems in healthcare services and financial difficulties. According to results, the recommendations are; new health units may be established for refugees and asylum-seekers and health personnel should be made conscious with various education programs.
