DIYARBAKIR BRANCH OF DEDE GRAKIN OCAK AND A HISTORICAL AND LITERARY ANALYSIS OF TWO NEW DOCUMENTS TAKEN FROM THIS BRANCH
Abstract :
The studies done on the ocak of Dede Garkın, whose founder pir lived between the late 12th - early 13th century and which is one of the first formed Alevi ocaks taking into account history traceable through written documents, show that the oldest settlement of dede and disciple communities affiliated with this ocak is Southeastern Anatolia. It occurs that, along with the provinces of Mardin and Şanlıurfa, the province of Diyarbakır, in which the ocak is still active, members are still living and disciple communities are located, is the main settlement where Alevi ocaks, mürşid ocaks and the ocak of Dede Garkın were formed within historic process. In the light of information obtained from interviews carried out in fieldwork and from land registrations along with data obtained from analyzing two documents taken from personal archives of dede families belonging to the ocak of Dede Garkın’s Diyarbakır branch, this study offers an insight into the local history of the ocak, the domain and competence of the ocak in the context of relationship between dede-dede and dede-disciple in terms of ritual, and the present day status of the ocak. Also, a detailed literary analysis of these two documents was done.
