Abstract
The effect of the tool geometry on friction stir spot welding of high density polyethylene sheets was studied. All the welding operations were done at the room temperature . Welding force of the tool was measured during the welding operation. Weld cross section appearence observations were done. Lap-shear tests were carried out the find the weld static strength. From the experiments the effect of the pin profile, pin size, shoulder diameter and shoulder angle were determined. The optimum tool geometry was determined for 4.0 mm thick sheets.
