Abstract :
Pruning is one of the factors affecting the yield and quality in cultivation of perennial woody plant. Whipping pruning is used in the oil-bearing rose growing unlike traditional pruning methods applied to perennial woody plants. Growers, who cultivated oil-bearing rose in the Isparta region, were done between November and March to whipping pruning practices regardless of plant growing status and bud number on branch. In this study aimed to determine effects of different whipping pruning heights on the rose oil yield and quality in oil-bearing rose. It was planned as three replicate, five different pruning heights (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 cm) and control (no pruning) treatments. Pruning heights significantly effected on rose yield (decare), oil percentage, oil yield (decare) and pruning waste. Best results were found in non-pruning treatments for rose yield, oil %, oil yield (decare) respectively 839 kg/da, 0.0316%, and 263 ml/da, and highest pruning waste were obtained by 20 cm pruning height. Pruning heights on bud weight were not significant. Rose oils subjected to gas chromatography and 26 components has been detected in essential oil composition monoterpene alcohols such as Citrenellol, Geraniol, Nerol, Linalol; hydrocarbons as Nonadecane, 1-heptadecene, Heneicosane, Tricosene, Heptadecene and Eicosane; ethers as Methyl Eugenol and phenols as Eugenol. Citrenellol varied from 21.11% - 26.93%, Geraniol 14.62% - 21.45%, Nerol 7.13% - 11.50%, Nonadecane 10.59% - 15.27%, 1-Heptadecene 3.44% - 4.75% and Heneicosane 7.63% - 10.92% respectively. Rate of Citrenellol/Geraniol, which is important quality for the rose oil flavor, were found as max. 1.81, min. 0.99.
