Abstract :
In this study, heavy metal content and contamination of Kovada Lake bottom sediments were investigated. To this end, bottom sediment samples were taken from a total of 10 different locations in May 2012 and October 2013 and the samples were analyzed. The enrichment factor values were used to assess heavy metals contamination in the sediments. In addition, thematic maps were prepared in order to investigate the spatial distribution of each heavy metal into the lake. According to the obtained results, mean accumulation of heavy metals were in the sequence as follows Mn Ni Zn Cu Pb As Co Fe. In general, Fe, Co and Pb values are below the average shale values, while Cu, Zn, Ni, Mn and As contents are above the average shale values in the lake bottom sediments. According to enrichment factor calculations, these elements show slight to moderate enrichment in the Kovada Lake and it has been concluded that these enrichments may have occurred with long-term convection from natural or anthropogenic sources.
