Abstract :
In this study, the chemical composition and the phenolic exractives of the species Laurus nobilis, Vitex agnus‐castus and Tamarix parviflora were investigated. The practicability of these species as an alternative raw material in the forest industry and in the production of antioxidant was examined. In the samples belonging to the species Laurus nobilis, Vitex agnus‐castus and Tamarix parviflora, the fallowing values were obtained: holocellulose content 73.26‐ 76.32%, cellulose content 53.58‐54.52%, α‐cellulose content 43.28‐44.73%, lignin content 20.39‐21.27%, ash content 2.12‐2.79%, ethanol cyclohexane solubility 2.49‐2.71%, cold water solubility 9.67‐11.70%, hot water solubility 10.77‐12.42% and 1% NaOH solubility 21.77‐24.48%. HPLC analyses showed that the total amount of phenolic extractives was found to be 2.09 mg/g in Vitex agnus‐castus, 1.05 mg/g in Tamarix parviflora and 0.58 mg/g in Laurus nobilis. The dominant phenolic extractive was determined as epicatechin (0.23 mg/g) in Laurus nobilis, gallic acid (0.17 mg/g) in Tamarix parviflora and p‐hydroxybenzoic acid (0.95 mg/g) in Vitex agnus‐castus. The results demonstrated that the obtained values from studied plants were comparable to hardwoods and softwoods and mentioned maquis species might be useful raw material for some industrial processes of forest products and commerical production of antioxidant.
