Abstract :
In this study, semantic meaning of the colour, red in Orhan Pamuk’s novel, My Name is Red was investigated. As a method, content analysis was used and based on the interpretation processes such as modifying, sign and referencing were adopted. The colour, red is mostly used in the chapter My Name is Red in the novel. All features of the colour were displayed in the aforementioned chapter in detail. Which words were modified and which meanings were referenced by this colour within the text of the novel were determined. It is possible to find all semantic and structural features of the red in the novel, My Name is Red. The red colour which is the most frequently used colour in the text is referenced to blood, love, fire and violence like poetic texts. Giving much place the colour, red in the novel maybe connected to the main topic of the novel, muralists’ lives and their paintings. The red, the colour of blood, love, fire and also the violence, with all these connotations integrates with the novel text. Like in a poetic text, the red is the colour of sunset in the novel. With a simple narration, it describes the novel characters’ cloths. The red with the causative form of the verb annoy means anger. Death and after-death is expressed with the red. The red generally describes fabrics, cloths, household goods and places. Also, how the red and its tones were formed by the muralists was dealt in detail in the novel. The red tones of the ornaments on the saddles over the horses drawn by the blind muralists were mentioned in the novel. Though the blind muralists forget most of thing, they never forget the colour, red
