Abstract :
This study was conducted for evaluating Self-Efficacy for Protection from Substance Abuse Scale and drinking reasons of students studying at Kafkas University Faculty of Education in terms of some socio-demographic variables. For this purpose, the sample group was formed by randomly selecting a total of 262 students studying in different programs of Kafkas University Faculty of Education in the academic year of 2014–2015. Drinking Motives Questionnaire and Self-Efficacy for Protection from Substance Abuse Scale were applied to these students. In addition, in the second part of the study, an open-ended question was asked to determine the reasons for using substances and the reasons not to use substance use in order to evaluate the substance use problem in a multidimensional way in 176 students The Guidance Counseling Psychological Counseling Department. As a result of this study using descriptive survey method, it was determined that the scores obtained by university students from the subscales of staying away from drugs/stimulant drugs, staying away from drugs/stimulant drugs under pressure, help-seeking about drugs/stimulant drugs, and supporting a friend about drugs/stimulant drugs from the Self-Efficacy for Protection from Substance Abuse Scale showed significant differences in terms of the variables of father’s educational level, gender, family’s residence, grade, habit of reading daily magazines and type of high school. Besides, it was observed that drinking reasons of the students differed according to the variables of department, gender, and type of high school. In the content analysis technique used in the analysis of the data, the positive and negative answers of the students were coded and they were combined under the common main themes. The results show that at the early reasons of substance use is to adapt to friends or the people in the environment, to create positive emotions under the influence of the substance in a fun environment, to avoid or reduce negative emotions. In addition, This study, the reasons of young participants for not using drugs was based on the consciousness of healthy living, experiencing negative change aesthetically, loss of financial, social relations will be negatively affected, cognitive reasons such as substance use are not solutions of their problem and finally sin in religious. Both qualitative and quantitative study results gave consistent results.
