Abstract :
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate clinically the efficiency of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) at the treatment of three-walled periodontal intrabony defects, through application of beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) alone and in combination with PRP, at the end of the 6 months healing period. Material andMethod: Systemically healthy ten chronic periodontitis patients with 2 similar 3-walled intrabony defects were included in the study. Following completion of oral hygiene instructions and periodontal phase-1 therapy, plaque index, gingival index, probing depth, clinical attachment level, gingival recession and bleeding on probing parameters were recorded. Defects were randomly selected at each patient and control defects were treated with β-TCP (n:10) and test with PRP/β-TCP (n:10) at the same time. Clinical measurements were repeated 6 months after treatment. Student t,Wilcoxon and Mc Nemar tests were used for statistical analyses of the clinical data. Results: Statistically significant reductions of gingival index, probing depths and bleeding on probing, as well as significant clinical attachment gains were observed at both groups after the treatment. Gingival recession alterations were insignificant for both groups after the treatment. No statistically significant difference was detected between the clinical results of two groups. Conclusion: After 6-months of healing period, both PRP/β-TCP and β-TCP treatment modalities were found clinically effective in the treatment of periodontal 3-walled intrabony defects. No significant additional benefits were found when PRP added to β-TCP.
