Abstract :
Objective: To evaluate periodontal health status in chronic renal failure (CRF) patients undergoing haemodialysis (HD) and to compare with systemically healthy subjects. Material and Method: Forty five CRF patients undergoing HD were included in the study. Control group consisted of age-gender matched 45 systemically healthy individuals. The determination of periodontal healthy status was based on the following indices: plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR) and clinical attachment level (CAL). Results: Out of 45 HD patients, 18 patients were diagnosed as having gingivitis (HD-G) and 27 patients were diagnosed as having periodontitis (HD-P). There were no statistically differences between HD-G and Control-G groups in terms of PI, GI, PD, GR, CAL and number of existing teeth (p 0.05). PD and CALmeasurements were found higher in Control-P group than HD-P group (p 0.001).When duration of HD considered statistically significant difference was found between HD-G and HD-P groups (p 0.01). Conclusion: The data from this study are indicated that periodontal healthy status of HD patients is comparable with healthy controls but become worse with duration on dialysis. Periodontal health maintenance is of utmost importance in this patient group.
