EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF FACE MASK THERAPY COMBINEDWITH POSTERIOR BITE-BLOCK IN SKELETAL CLASS 3 HIGHANGLE CASES

Objective: To investigate the effects of the use of face mask combined with a posterior bite block in high angle skeletal class 3 cases. Material andMethod: Study was carried out on 13 skeletal class 3 high angle cases with a meanANB of -1.3°±0.5° and SN/Go-Gn of 39.9°±1.4° at pretreatment. Control group consisted of 13 skeletal class 3 cases with a mean ANB of -2.5 ± 0.6° and SN/Go-Gn of 33.3° ± 1.2°. The mean chronological age of the treatment group and control group was 10.23 years and 9.38 years respectively. A face mask and a posterior bite block was used in the treatment group. During face mask therapy, 750 gr of anterior force was applied to the maxilla. Material of this study consisted of 52 lateral cephalograms which were digitized with RMO JOE software. Intragroup comparisons were made by paired t tests whereas student t tests were used for intergroup comparison. Results: SNAincrease was significantly higher in treatment group compared to control group.ANB andWits appraisal were increased significantly in treatment group. Maxillary height (CF-A/CF-N) was decreased with a mean value of 0.3º in treatment group but it was not significant. Mandibular plane angle (SN/GoGn) didn’t show any statistically significant change both in interclass and intraclass comparison. Conclusion: The use of face mask with posterior bite block prevented the anterior rotation of maxilla and did not display any significant role in increasing backward mandibular rotation and anterior facial height.
