Abstract :
Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the dimensional changes of AH Plus and AH 26 sealers that extruded unintentionally into periradicular tissues during obturation and also examine the effects of these sealers on the healing of permanent teeth with chronic periradicular periodontitis over time. Material andMethod: Recall radiographs up to 12 months of total 41 root canals with extruded root canal sealers were compared with immediate postoperative films. The change in the amount of extraradicular sealer was recorded as “unchanged”, “reduced”, “almost absent”, and “absent”.Atotal of 30 root canals with sealer extrusion and chronic periradicular periodontitis were selected and examined for periapical healing. Radiographic parameters for lesion size also scored as “reduction in lesion size/complete healing”, “no change in lesion size”, and “increase in lesion size”. The statistical analysis was performed using Student’s t-test,Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal- Wallis, Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests (p 0.05). Results: There was statistically significant difference in the reduction of extruded material between AH Plus and AH 26 sealers (p 0.001), whereas there were not any significant differences (p 0.05) between two different sealers in terms of periapical healing at the end of the follow-up period. Most of the extrudedAH Plus sealer were less than 1mm (70%) and demonstrated no change in their dimensional stability within time, whereas, most of the extruded AH 26 sealer were less than 1 mm (52.4%) and all of them became absent at the end of the follow-up period. When the relationship between the amount of the extruded sealer and periapical healing were investigated, the extrudedAH Plus andAH 26 sealers were mostly less than 1mm (70% and 60%, respectively) and they demonstrated a reduction in lesion size or a complete healing within time. Conclusion: In the present study, it is concluded that AH 26 sealer is removed from periradicular tissues more rapidly than AH Plus sealer and both sealers do not prevent periapical healing.
