مرکز منطقه ای اطلاع رساني علوم و فناوري - THE EFFECT OF REINFORCEMENTWITH POLYETHYLENE FIBER AND TWO DIFFERENT POLYMERIZATION METHODS ON THE AMOUNT OF RESIDUAL MONOMER OFACRYLIC RESINS

Abstract :

Objective: The aim of this study was to evluate the effect of polyethylene fibers used to improve the mechanical properties of resins and two different polymerisation methods on the residual monomer content of the acrylic resins. Material and Method: Brass die of 20 mm diameter and 2 mm thicness were used to standard dimensional acrylic resin specimens. Resin specimens which were polimerized by heat and microwave energy were seperated into two groups. One group was reinforced by polyethylene fiber (PE), the other group was not reinforced. Reinforced and unreinforced resins were polymerized by using two different polymerization method. Residual monomer content was measured by UV-VIS spectrometer device. Data were evaluated by one-wayANOVAtest, and the differences were determined by Tukey HSD and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: Polyethylene fiber decreased the residual monomer content in heat polymerized resins (p 0.05), although it increased the residual monomer content in microwave polymerized resins (p 0.05). Statistically difference was observed between the heat and microwave polymerized methods in reinforced group (p 0.05), although there was no statistically difference between the heat and microwave polymerized group (p 0.05). Conclusion: While there is statistically difference between the polymerization methods for the residual monomer amount of groups that are not reinforced with PE fiber, there is no difference in the reinforced group.
