Abstract :
Objective: The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of two different polymerization methods on the residual monomer of polyethylene fiber reinforced acrylic resins. Material andMethod: Acrylic resin disc were prepared to 20 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness and were divided 2 groups. One group included cross-woven form PE fiber, the other group did not included fiber (control group). Both groups were polymerized with heat and gamma irradiation. Residual monomer content was measured by UV-VIS spectrometer device. Data were analyzed with one-way variance (ANOVA) test. Differences were determined by Tukey HSD and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: It was observed that residual monomer of heat polymerized acrylic specimens was lower than the gamma polymerized acrylic specimens (p 0.05) in both groups. Polyethylene fiber, decreased the residual monomer of heat polymerized resins (p 0.05), although increased the residual monomer of gamma polymerized resins (p 0.05). Conclusion: The polymerization method with heat revealed less residual monomer amount than polymerization with gamma irradiation on both acrylic resins that include PE fiber or not.
