Title Of Article :
AN EVALUATION OF EFFICACY OF NITROUS OXIDE/ OXYGEN SEDATION IN ANXIOUS CHILDREN DURING THE DENTAL TREATMENT
Abstract :
Objective: In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the datas provided from anxious children during dental treatment under conscious sedation with nitrous oxide and oxygen (N2O/O2). Material and Method: Records from a total of 169 children with indications for dental treatment under conscious sedation with N2O and O2, treated at University of Gazi, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, in a three year period (2006-2009), were reviewed. The datas from patient records including vital parameters, success of sedation, anesthesiologist, dentist and parents’ satisfaction and side effects were evaluated. Results: After evaluation, conscious sedation with N2O and 02 was 65 % effective during dental treatment of 4-12 child cases, and caused heart rate increase of 17 % of patients. Sedation related side effects were nausea (25 %) and vomiting (10 %). Sedation success have decreased in parallel to low anxiety levels and low patient age, 2 % of patients complained of headaches after the procedure has been finalized. Conclusion: We believe that N2O/O2 sedation agent that has minimal side effects can be used in sucessfully in only selected cases because of low effectiveness.
