Abstract :
Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of fiber and polymerization methods on the residual monomer of polymethyl methacrylate resins which are used as a denture base material. Material andMethod: In this study heat polymerized and microwave polymerized resins and E-glass fiber for reinforcement the were used. Four groups were prepared. five specimens for each group, totally twenty units of resin specimens 20 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness like disc shape were prepared. The residual monomer content of specimens were measured with high performance liquid chromatography. Data was analyzed with Mann-Whitney U and Tukey HSD following one-way variance (ANOVA) analyzed test. Results: It was determined that, fiber decreased the residual monomer on the heat polymerized acrylic reins (p 0.05), while increased the residual monomer on the microwave polymerized acrylic reins (p 0.05). Residual monomer was less the microwave polymerized specimens on the unreinforced groups and heat polymerized specimens on the reinforced groups. There was not statistically differences between the polymerization methods of both unreinforced and reinforced groups (p 0.05). Conclusion: Low concentration of residual monomer was observed in all groups which evaluated in this study. However these concentrations were ISO standart’s limitations.
