Abstract :
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of noncavitated (d1) and cavitated (d2-3) carious lesions according to the modified d1-d3 scale, in a group of 5 year old children. Material andMethod: Children (n= 407) were examined inYeditepe University, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Pediatric Dentistry Clinics. Modified modified d1-d3 scalewas used. Results: Mean dft was found as 1,84±2,7 and mean dfs was found as 2,20±3,7. The prevalence of children with caries or fillings were 68.8%. The mean number (1,14±2,07) and prevalence (%35,63) of noncavitated carious lesions (d1) were higher than the sum of mean number and prevalence of cavitated lesions (d2-3). The teeth and surface most affected by noncavitated lesions were occlusal surface of second primary molars and mesial surface of maxillary central incisors. Conclusion: This study reveals the importance of including incipient caris lesions when assessing the prevalence of dental caries in the primary dentition. Noncavitated incipient carious lesions were more prevalent than cavitated lesions in this group of five year old children.
