Abstract :
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate, clinical and radiographic success of by two implant supported ball-retained mandibuler overdentures after 5 years of usage. Implant surgery was performed utilising single-stage implant surgery. Material and Method: Fully edentulous patients (n = 30) were treated with two endosseous implants in the interforaminal region of the mandible. Ball-retained overdentures were fabricated on two unsplinted implants. During 5 years of clinical use, patients were examined by annual periodical recall. Clinical assessments and radiographic assessments were conducted by means of plaque index, calculus index, peri-implant inflammation, bleeding index, probing depth and standardized periapical radiographs, respectively. Marginal bone loss were measured by standardized periapical radiographs. Clinical and radiographic parameters were determined 3 months after implant surgery other means immediately after completion of the prosthetic treatment (T0) and after 1 year (T1) and 5 years (T5) of functional loading. Results: At the end of 5-year follow-up period, plaque index 0.3 ± 0.6, calculus index 0.4 ± 0.4, peri-implant inflamation index 0.2 ± 0.5, bleeding index 0.8 ± 0.5, probind depth 2.0 ± 0.5 were recorded. Mean marginal bone loss over a period of 5 years were 0.8 mm. Conclusion: In fully edentulous patients, 5-year clinical and radiographic evaluation showed that two implants placed in the interforaminal region with mandibular overdenture, supplies a proper treatment modality for the edentulous patients.
