Abstract :
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is stated as the most common type of oral cancers.A56-years old Caucasian female was referred to for the evaluation of painful, non-healing ulcer located on the posterior buccal gingiva in the left mandibular quadrant of 6 months’ duration. An initial diagnosis after the incisional biopsy is actinomyces lesion. There was no improvement in the condition of the patients following the treatment of the actinomyces lesion with oral antibiotic therapy. Therefore the second biopsy was performed and the new diagnosis was SCC. Tumor was resected and second premolar, first and second molars were extracted. No radiotherapy or chemotherapy was required. No recurrence or metastasis was detected during the 3 years follow-up period. In this case report we discuss that the significantly increased Actinomyces species at the lesion might lead to misdiagnosis as actinomyces lesion. Therefore, clinicians must follow the improvements of the case carefully.
