EVALUATION OF THE BOND STRENGTH OF COMBINED AMALGAMAND RESIN COMPOSITE RESTORATIONS
Abstract :
Objective: To evaluate the effects of different surface treatments and adhesive systems on the shear bond strength of amalgam to resin composite in combined restorations. Material and Method: A total of 130 amalgam samples (4x6 mm) were fabricated. They were divided into 13 groups (n=10). Eight groups were treated with diamond fissure burs while 5 groups were treated with CoJet silica coating . ScotchbondMulti Purpose Plus, XenoV , Tetric N Bond ,Alloybond, C B Metabond were used as bonding systems.Alloy Primer was applied onto the surfaces in bur-treated groups for Xeno V and Tetric N-Bond each. Samples were repaired with a resin composite. Shear bond strengths were tested with a Universal testing machine. ANOVA Student’s t and Tukey HSD tests were used for statistical analyses (p=0,05). Results: Amongst all groups, bur+ScotchbondMulti Purpose Plus group showed the lowest shear bond strength (p 0.05). The bond strength of bur+Alloy Primer+Xeno V group was lower than CoJet+Xeno group. CoJet+ Tetric N-Bond group bonded well to resin composite as well as CoJet+Scotchbond Multi Purpose Plus group. C B Metabond application after CoJet preparation resulted also well regarding the shear bond strengths. Conclusion: The surface preparations on amalgam affect the bond strength between resin composite and amalgam. Due to the fact that amalgam bonding agents and self-etching adhesives increase the bond strength between the materials, it is essential to use these agents in case of amalgam-resin combined restorations.
