Abstract :
Oral cancer is usually first diagnosed when it becomes symptomatic. By this stage approximately two thirds of patients will have already developed advanced disease and have a consequently diminished prognosis. The detection of premalignant and early malignant lesions of the oral mucosa allows for treatment that may be sufficiently early to prevent their progression to invasive carcinoma. Oral examination alone cannot always distinguish benign from premalignant and malignant lesions. Therefore, adjunctive techniques have been developed to improve the oral mucosal examination and facilitating the detection of and distinctions between oral benign and oral premalignant and malignant lesions. The aim of this review is to explain indications, working principals, advantages and disadvantages of the techniques used for detection of suspicious lesions of the oral mucosa.
