  • Abstract
High prevalence of autoantibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD-Ab) in autoimmune encephalitis patients both helps diagnosis and suggests immune mediated pathogenesis in autoimmune syndromes. Serum GAD-antibodies were investigated with ELISA in 140 patients with suspected autoimmune encephalitis and found positive in 10 patients (%17.5) with stiff-man syndrome, cerebellar degeneration, limbic encephalitis and epilepsy. Raised GAD-Ab positivity clustered in a subgroup with limbic encephalitis or isolated seizures. A single patient with lung cancer also displayed GAD-Ab. Overall, GAD-Ab positive patients showed partial to full response to immunotherapy. In autoimmune encephalitis patients, GAD-Ab may be used as a biomarker for cancer screening indication and good response to immunotherapy.
