Abstract :
Morphologically as a extension of İzmir Bay, Bornova plain is a tectonic depression lying along the north-west direction. The depression has been deposited by terrestrial sediments since Pliocene and its recent morphological appearance has been formed by sea level changes during Holocene. In this study, sediment analyses based on the core drillings which performed on the plain are assessed together with microfossil data in order to determine paleogeographical evolution of the Bornova plain and its stratigraphical characteristics of alluvial sediments. The alluvial sediments consist of three main stratigraphic units. These are the Pre-Holocene terrestrial deposits, the Holocene marine sediments and the recent fluvial sediments. The results indicate that in the Mid-Holocene, coastline was inner 1,5 km more than the current coastline of the Bornova plain. Due to the morphological features of Bornova area, facies changes related to the transgression occurred along a narrow coastal zone
