Abstract :

Increasing energy demand in Turkey causes to carry out numerous HEPP projects. A large number of HEPPs have been constructed especially in the Çoruh Basin, which has a remarkable potential, and many others have still been constructed. Therefore, there are five HEPPs in the province of Artvin which is located in the Çoruh Basin, four of them have been completed and one is still being constructed. The HEPP which is being constructed in Yusufeli district of Artvin province has been examined in the study. Although it is essential in terms of energy, it affects the people living in the region both positively and negatively. The residential areas in Yusufeli will be under the water of Yusufeli Dam, therefore new residential areas are being built. In this study, we have tried to reveal the expectations of the residents in Yusufeli from the new residential areas. And also, the places where the local residents want to migrate, the reasons, and the migration trends in their preferences for the new residential areas have been assessed. The data used in the study consists of; (i) population and migration statistics from official institutions and organizations (ii) Survey data obtained from field surveys applied in Yusufeli district. Simple Correspondence Analysis has been applied to the collected data to determine the participants immigration tendencies for the future, and the relationship between the cities and the reasons why they want to migrate. According to the survey results, ¾ of the local people do not support dam construction. It is thought that approximately ¼ of the local people will migrate after the construction of the dam. The analysis shows that the results of the analysis, the migrations are mostly expected to the major cities with stronger bonds of countrymen/relatives for economic reasons. Although not so much, the surrounding cities have also been preferred because of their proximity to Artvin, their similarity in cultural-physical environment and owing to their health facilities are more developed than that of Yusufeli.
