    The Use of Methane Gas for Carbon Nanotube Synthesis

  • Abstract
    In this study, optimum conditions of multi-walled carbon nanotube synthesis using Fe3O4 oxide particles and methane by chemical vapor deposition method were investigated. Temperature (preheating and growth temperature) and time were chosen as process parameters. Methane, which is the main component of natural gas, was used as a carbon source because it is relatively cheap, abundant and environmentally favorable. Thermodynamic analysis was carried out by the method of minimization Gibbs’ free energy in order to predict the conditions for carbon nanotube formation and to understand thermochemistry of the synthesis process.
