Abstract :
The aim of this numerical study is investigate the flow structure past a rectangular, triangular and semi-circular cavity of length-to-depth ratio of 2:1. A commercial software FLUENT is used for numerical results. The influence of cavity shape on the flow structure and heat transfer of the cavity is the focal point of this paper. Cavities are heated from side and bottom walls respectively. Three cavity shapes are studied: the classical rectangular one, semi-circular one and a triangular on each having a length-to-depth ratio (L/D) of 2:1. Contours of constant averaged stream wise and transverse components of velocity, contours of constant averaged vorticity, contours of temperature distribution and kinetic energy for each cavity type for three different Reynolds numbers are presented. Effect of the cavity shape on flow structure and temperature distribution with in the cavity is discussed in detail.
