Abstract :
The aim of this article is to emphasize the significance of texts like translator‘s note, preface, diary, correspondence, etc. by renaming them under the blanket term of self - description, a particular kind of description carried out by the translator as part of the process of translation. In this way, the TS scholar will be able to view the facts of translation from a different angle, namely from the insider‘s, the translator‘s personal, subjective stance. When in 1972 James Holmes named the field as Translation Studies he pointed to the fact that every recognized independent field of study should establish its own descriptive studies. Self - description will add to this field, as a long established tradition of the translator‘s attempt of communication with not only the reader but also the researcher. Should self - description be adopted as a convention of the translation process and is institutionalized, the translator will automatically be visible in her/his decisions, thus gaining authority. On the other hand, such categorizations should not be considered absolute instead be readily relativized with changing focal points. This article suggests that ―self-description‖ is conventional and a commonplace for the literary translator, an invaluable database for the TS scholar. It also attempts to investigate if this may obtain for other specific fields of translation and their relevant text types, and therefore, if they contribute to the TS scholars working in different areas like translation pedagogy, criticism, history, etc.
