TRANSLATOR’S MEMOIR AS A FORM OF SELF DESCRIPTION

The status of the translator has been discussed throughout the history of Translation Studies, and unfortunately it appears as an undeniable fact that translator’s presence has been ignored so far by keeping her/him in an invisible/silent position. It has only been possible with few prefaces, footnotes and interviews to see/hear the translator. Translator’s right to communicate with readers and authenticate her/his presence has been denied, and by doing so self description cannot be institutionalized. However, self description texts, which are written through a meta view on translator’s presence and her/his work, can contribute to both theoretical and applied fields of Translation Studies. This article tries to show the importance of “invisible/silent” translator’s self description on her/his own translation process in terms of translation studies through the example of Gregory Rabassa’s memoir, If This Be Treason.
