Recyclable solid waste inventory for Erciyes University central campus
Abstract :
Due to rapid population growth and technological developments, there has been a significant increase in magnitude and type of solid wastes generated in cities in recent years. Recyclable wastes constitute an important part of solid wastes. In this study, we aim to characterize the recyclable solid wastes generated at university campuses by analyzing the wastes generated at Erciyes University. The study was conducted at the Faculty of Engineering at Erciyes University during the 2010-2011 academic year (October 2010 – May 2011). In each month, the amounts of total wastes and recyclable solid wastes were measured daily for a week. The results showed that during the October 2010 – May 2011 period, 491 kg solid wastes were produced per week at the Faculty of Engineering. 73% of these wastes were recyclable wastes. Of recyclable solid wastes, 47% of solid wastes was glass, 31% was paper, 13% was plastic and 9% was metal. Total amount of solid wastes and recyclable solid wastes generated at Erciyes University was predicted to be at least 116 tons and 86 tons, respectively.
