Abstract
Bread wheat varieties should have proper quality characteristics desired by different consumer groups. Several factors such as fertilization, irrigation, sowing rates and periods, pests, diseases, weed control and harvest period affect the quality characteristics of wheat. Therefore, proper fertilization programs should be implemented, proper irrigation schedules should be arranged by taking ripening periods and fertilization programs into consideration to prevent quality loses. Also proper sowing rates and periods should be selected based on competitiveness of the variety to maintain the yield and quality. Pests, diseases and weed control practices should be implemented on-time. Harvest periods should be selected carefully, not allowing either grain fractures with significantly low moisture contents ( 8%) or spoilage with significantly high moisture contents ( 15%). A producer should always keep in mind that a 100% improvement in wheat yield and quality comes 60% from selection of high yield varieties and 40% from improvements in cultural practices.
