Abstract :
Geophyte plants is a general name given to plants which under the ground body such as bulbs, tubers and rhizomes, gained ability to store nutrients. 816 Geophyte species belonging to 73 genera have been registered in Flora of Turkey. In this study, Geophyte plants which collected by the local people living in rural areas like Alaşehir (Manisa) mountains or gardens, were investigated. The geophyte plants used for various purposes by the local public are identified with this study conducted between 2009-2011 in Alaşehir and its surrounding area, preset 6 towns and 43 villages. Examples of the plants identified in their localities are collected and brought to the lab, and diagnosed according to the Flora of Turkey. At the end of the study, 60 taxa belonging to 8 families of Geophytes used for food, ornamental and healing purposes by the local people are determined. The Geophyte families has been detected as; Amaryllidaceae, Araceae, Asparagaceae, Geraniaceae, Iridaceae, Liliaceae, Orchidaceae, and Primulaceae.
